How long have you been in education, and what positions have you had?
I have been in education for over two decades, serving in a variety of roles, including SLPA, classroom teacher, art teacher, and campus administrator. These diverse experiences have given me a well-rounded perspective on student needs, instructional practices, and campus systems, all of which inform my current work as Coordinator of Instructional Materials.
What would you tell a person new to this job?
Build strong relationships early with campus staff, district leaders, and vendors. This role sits at the intersection of instruction, compliance, and logistics, so communication and collaboration are essential. I would also encourage new coordinators to develop a deep understanding of state requirements and timelines, as that knowledge becomes the foundation for every decision you make.
What is the most unexpected challenge you have faced in this role?
One of the most unexpected challenges has been balancing compliance with the urgency of campus needs while also wearing multiple hats beyond instructional materials. In addition to managing IM processes, this role often intersects with broader district initiatives and support needs. There are times when campuses need immediate solutions, and this work provides an opportunity to ensure all materials align with policy, funding requirements, and approval processes while remaining responsive and supportive. This balance has strengthened my ability to build clear systems and provide thoughtful, timely support to campuses.
What is one skill you would love to learn and why?
I would like to deepen my capacity in data analytics and visualization to better leverage data around usage, spending, and impact. Communicating these insights effectively strengthens decision-making and elevates the conversation around how instructional materials support instructional quality and student outcomes.
